Jesus could have come and healed Lazarus when he was still alive.
Instead, He waited to raise him from the dead when he was already in his grave.
God could have made David become king the day after he was anointed.
Instead, He waited 15 years to rise to the throne, many of those years spent fearing for his life, hiding out and running away from his own father-in-law.
God could have spoken to Moses in the desert about sending him to help free His people from slavery 40 days after he ran away from Egypt.
Instead, He made him wait for 40 long years.
God could have gotten Joseph out of prison one year after he was sentenced there.
Instead, he was stuck in that dungeon for 10 years before he was finally set free.
God could have given Abraham the son He promised him when he was still a young man.
Instead, He waited until he was 100 years old and because of physical reasons would have a more difficult time conceiving at that age.
God could have answered prayers and met the needs of these men of God much quicker, but He didn’t.
He made them wait instead.
And He often makes us do the same.
He makes us wait for healing to come after we’ve been praying for years and there is no sign of recovery.
He makes us wait to fulfill His call in our lives after He puts the desire and passion in our hearts to serve Him in a certain way.
He makes us wait to give us the desires of our hearts, whether it’s a baby, a spouse, or a new job.
He makes us wait for direction when we are stuck at a dead end and we don’t know where to go or what to do.
He could answer that same prayer that you’ve been praying for years every night in a millisecond.
That same prayer that has been bringing you to tears.
That same prayer that the longer that it goes unanswered, the more it makes you question whether He even hears.
But He doesn’t.
He kept Moses in a desert for 40 years.
Joseph in a prison cell for 10 years.
Abraham without a child for 100 years.
David on the run for 15 years.
And maybe He is keeping you right where you’re at for the same reason He kept these men for so many years: to build your faith.
To build your faith in a dungeon cell, during the valley in your life where it’s too dark to see and too hard to believe.
To build your dependence on Him when you are barren and empty to see if He is truly all you desire and all you need.
To see how well you will trust and serve Him when you are still stuck in the background somewhere, doing seemingly nothing too significant for Him.
To build your trust in Him when the storm keeps raging, the battle keeps going and breakthrough and victory doesn’t seem near.
See… sometimes the waiting period of our lives is the most important time in our life.
It is during this period when nothing seems to be happening, when prayers seem to go unanswered, when God seems so far away that the most spiritual growth takes place in our lives. That we learn to become more like Him.
It is during this time that we build spiritual “muscle”.
That we grow in faith.
That we learn to only depend on Him.
What are you waiting for today?
What longing do you have that seems so far from ever being fulfilled?
What prayer do you keep on praying that seems to never reach God’s ears?
I want to remind you that God is not deaf to your prayers.
He is not blind to your constant tears, to your desires, and to your needs.
If He is making you wait, there is a very good reason for it.
If He is telling you “no” today, maybe it’s because He has a better “yes” waiting for you tomorrow.
If He is keeping you in the same place you’ve always been today, maybe it’s because He’s helping build your faith before you enter your Promised Land tomorrow.
If He is not healing you or bringing you victory today, maybe it’s because you will have a greater testimony when He waits to help you be an overcomer tomorrow.
Wherever you are at today know that God is right beside you and that there is a purpose for you. Even if that purpose is to wait.
Don’t give up just because you don’t see anything happening today.
Maybe there is nothing physically happening that your eyes can see but there is definitely something happening in the spiritual realm as you learn to rely on Christ.
Don’t allow your waiting period to make you hopeless about what tomorrow will bring.
Instead, let it build your faith and give you even greater hope for what God has prepared for you.
He made some of the greatest men of faith wait.
Don’t be discouraged if He makes you wait as well.
He will come through for you, just like He came through for them.

So much truth!
Last year, my girlfriend (now fiance) went to Rwanda to do some mission work for six months. It was one of the most difficult times of my life knowing that she was on the other side of the world from me and not knowing when I would hear from her again. Yet, our relationship with each other and our relationship with God grew in ways that it otherwise could not have. Waiting is hard but we do not wait in vain. God nurtures and grows us in those difficult waiting periods even if we do not see it at the time.
I can only imagine how hard it must have been to have a long-distance relationship with someone you love when you’re so used to seeing all that time (especially when they are in a foreign country)! And I totally agree with you, we never wait in vain when we’re waiting on God (unless we waste the time of waiting by complaining about it and putting our life on hold).
Sometimes it is only when we reach the end that we finally understand how God used that waiting time to grow us in ways we wouldn’t have grown any other way. In the end the waiting is always worth it!

Beautifully put, Anna. It’s so encouraging to remember that the Lord had a sovereign plan for the men and women who were asked to wait in the Bible. So often it is that He may be glorified even more, like when He raised Lazarus from the dead. He was glorified not just in the display of His power in raising Lazarus, but also in the growth of Mary and Martha’s faith and their declaration of their belief in Him as the Messiah. It’s true that waiting builds faith, but I think what is difficult is not just the sustained period of longing or desire, but the fact that often that desire begins to eclipse our desire for God and our surrender to what He is doing in our lives. It’s a challenge not to be defined by the fact that we are “waiting.” I think it is important to keep walking in faith that God hears and answers our prayers, but also to remember that in His sovereignty, He has placed me where I am today.
Oh yes, I totally agree with you – it is so hard to not be defined by what we are waiting for or make our lives revolve around it because once we do we start desiring that more than God and His will for our life, which may or may not include granting us whatever it is that we are waiting and praying for. God is sovereign and He knows exactly what we need better than we do and we can always rest assured knowing that waiting is the best place for us at the moment because if it wasn’t then we wouldn’t be there. 🙂 Thank you for sharing your thoughts on here. Fantastic post, Anna. I love all your examples of this hard and sometimes painful truth. I know how hard it is to wait on those unanswered prayers. But everything I think I have better timing, God, in his loving and patient ways, shows me his timing is always best.
I usually want to avoid pain. He’s interested in the deeper waters where faith and purpose are found.

I definitely agree with you Lori. We all think we know what’s best for us because all we see is what’s in front of us and what seems good at the moment but God sees the big picture and what will be beneficial for us eternally and often times our opinions of what is good for us doesn’t come close to what God knows is actually good for us.
Pain and disappointments are something we all try to avoid but usually those are the exact methods that God uses to strengthen our faith and build our character.
I’m always so encouraging during hard times in life when things don’t go my way and prayers remain unanswered because I know God has better plans for my life than my own! 🙂

God is definitely the greatest gift we can have and I’m so grateful that no matter what He gives or doesn’t give in our lives we always have Him, because in the end, He is all that we really need. Loved this, Anna! Especially the imagery of building spiritual muscles through waiting. Made me think: physical muscles are developed through exercise. We must exercise our spiritual muscles (while we wait) through continual affirmation of what we know of God’s attributes, His promises, how He’s worked in the past, etc. Muscles also need proper nutrition to grow. Spiritually, we must feed on God’s Word–while we wait. Thank you for your thought-provoking post, and also for visiting my blog. I’m delighted you found “Sparrows in God’s Hand” to be meaningful!

Jacobs example of waiting 7 years for Rachel reveals the patience that flows naturally from a heart of love. Patience is an act of love and trust. It says in Genesis 29:20 that he served this time but it basically flew past “because of his love for her”. This is our response to Jesus when He makes us wait. Because of the natural outflow of love we have for Him, we wait. We follow Him first and foremost because of our love for Him and not for what we can get. If we have to wait, for whatever, then we do so in love and trust knowing that, even if we don’t get what we wait for, we remain in our love for Him. This is the foundation. In this example Jacob is a symbol of Jesus as the Bridegroom waiting for His Bride the church to prepare herself. We reflect back this love by doing our part in living in holiness, consecration and wholeheartedly for Him and His Kingdom. We maintain an utterly undivided heart. We give ourselves fully and unconditionally in love. As stated in Revelation 19:7 ” Let us rejoice and be glad and give Him glory. For the wedding of the Lamb has come and His bride has made herself ready”. In love and patient obedience, we await His plans and His return by playing our part in full surrender and making ourself ready.
Amen! Love how you connected this to Jacob and Rachel. You are right, when a person truly loves someone waiting doesn’t automatically become “easy” but it becomes worth it in the end and the time seems to fly by. The more we fall in love with God the easier it will become to wait for His promises to unfold in our lives as well as for the day of His return. It’s so important for us to use the wait wisely and live each day for His glory rather than waste it worrying about the future or the things that are not happening yet. It’s all about surrendering our plans, our ambitions, our desires into His hands and letting Him do what is best in His own time.
Thanks. I also wanted to connect it to the bigger picture which involves the call on the church. Jacob and Rachel’s love story is a prophetic pointer to Gods love story with His church.
Let us love Him first, above all else, with all our heart and seek His Kingdom and His ways at all times. Seeking wisdom and staying close to Him. Yielding to the work of the Holy Spirit in perfecting the nature of Christ in us. Knowing His timings – this comes again through our intimacy with Him. These are the foundations of our life in Christ. James 5 v 7-11. We suffer very little in comparison to the prophets of old.
We are called to be counter cultural. This is a quick fix culture. A fast food culture. A society with “spoiled child” syndrome that cries “I must have it know…I must be entertained now…I must be stimulated now”…..etc. And, it spills over into the Body of Christ. Our journey is into the fullness and stature of Christ, if we yield to the process. This is the core of the calling on us. This is the Bride that Jesus seeks. A reflection of Himself. Many are offering quick routes in these days but this is a falsehood.
A true carpenter is the ultimate craftsman. Even before he begins the process of crafting the table or chair he is going to make, he already has an appreciation of time and patience. He knows that even before the wood in his hand got there it required a process that involved yet more time and patience. The tree had to grow from a seed. Over seasons it had to be matured from a sapling. In this way the carpenter is connected to the earth and its times and seasons. This part of James in Chapter 5 refers to these seasons of the earth. Tuning in to Gods rhythm for our lives is so needed. His times and seasons. I am not saying it is always easy because its not. Then, each part of that table has to be measured, cut and planed and sanded. Each joint also has to be accurately measured and fitted to the finest detail otherwise the table will not stand. I am sure Jesus made excellent tables and we can trust Him, as we yield to Him, to make something of our lives……………but yeah…..waiting is hard !
Wow. You took this from a whole different angle. I love it! We are very much a quick fix culture which is to all of our disadvantage because having our characters daily worked on by Christ is a very long process that doesn’t finish until we die. And you are right, just like a good carpenter knows ahead of time what He is making Jesus knows as well when it comes to each one of us. It get hard being on the potter’s wheel because although we know God’s plan for us is ultimately for our own good sometimes part of that plan involves us going through hardships and suffering and when we are walking through those seasons it becomes difficult to see the bigger picture and to trust that God knows what He’s doing (because He obviously does). The best thing we can do is continue surrendering ourselves to Christ’s molding and find our joy and hope in Him during those times that really don’t make sense. He can (and will) make something useful out of our lives if we allow Him to!

Another great Blog … well written and thought out … regarding how God will make us wait patiently on Him so that we can build our faith and character.
Yes, we must be persistent in seeking God for answers to our requests and wait patiently for the answer (Matthew 7:7; 15:22-28; Luke 18:1-8). Galatians 6:9 says, “And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart”; Lamentations 2:19 puts it this way, “Pour out your heart like water before the face of the Lord” and Colossians 4:2 says, “Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving.”
Probably the greatest reason that so many prayers go unanswered is because His children go through the day without uttering a single prayer and so many just give up praying and believing before they receive their answer. We must always remember that God takes pleasure in hearing from His children.
Proverbs 15:8 says, “The prayer of the upright is His delight.” So, as long as we have the promise of God’s Word, be patient and be persistent, keep believing, and don’t quit, no matter how long it takes as you so nicely illustrated in this blog! We must remember that God answers prayer according to His time and will (Psalm 40:1), and He has a “due season” when He will bring the answer to pass.
Ladies it will be done to you as you believe. The question is do you believe?

i dont know if im tired of reading stuff like this or whats wrong with me. Please dont take offense to what I am about to say, however (and I must add, I am very much a christian, even though to the readers eye I dont seem it) I have been suffering for a TERRIBLY long time. and not alone now,everything under the sun ive endured. And i have been praying , crying my SOUL out, for YEARS. I mean, my words dont even justify it. Praying for some direction, some answer. and what do i get? more and more troubles, more worries. it seems brutally unfair that god is making my little one go through this as well.the solitude is literally killing me and I talk to god’s insulated wall of grace more than I talk to people. silence. so i dont know if im just looking for a sign that hes out there somewhere or just another reason to not loose my sanity but tell me, is he waiting for some of us to die like lazarus to redeem us? when he neither pulls tight or releases fully on satan’s reins, surely, God must know the anguish of our souls and would not want any to perish because of it? Im struggling to understand, and ive tried to understand the reasoning for all of this, but I cannot. im trying my best for him, and yet the pain continues.

Deuteronomy 31:6 “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”
i swallow these verses like manna, but im weak. and im terrified because i see no future, im so used to the pain i dont know what else to expect.
i commend you all on your faith, and im sorry I struggle to keep my lamp lit, but im just hoping for deliverance. i dont know how you all can do it.

I don’t know exactly what you are going through, and to be honest I don’t think it matters, in this case. I can feel your sorrow coming through your words.
I am a mother as well and my family suffers for about 3 years with both my precious boys health.
I have been through so much pain and questioning that I now find myself going to therapy to see if I can get ANY answers. To be honest I think it’s helping me just in the aspect of “releasing” my anxiety, frustrations, and some anger.
Like you, I heard and know many of the bible verses that encourages us on times of hardship. Some of them like 1 Petter 5:10 10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. Verses like these has kept me going on the hardest times.
I want you to know you are not alone! God is right there caring you through! You could never been able to go through half the stuff you have been through already if wasn’t for his streght. He is there even when we don’t see, feel, or hear Him. Our ‘little’ minds can’t see the way He sees things. We don’t know the future like He does and we most of time think we know what is best for us, but the truth is only He knows what you can handle, only He knows what is best for you , and He is the only one who knows time , the real time! Our best choice is to TRUST him, listen to what his ‘silence’ is teaching us, see through his eyes and the words of the bible so we overcome this hardships the best way possible.
I am sure if Jesus was human he wouldn’t understand God’s love for us, but He offered his own life sor those who rejected him, those who didn’t even know him, and those who hated him! If he Loves us that much, all the suffering we go through must have a purpose! A beginning and an end.
I am sorry you have to see your little one suffer, I myself want to take all my kids pain onto my body to alleviate their suffering, but I have to trust God, and know he knows what is best for me and my family. He knows my limits, and His plans are not only GREATER then mine, but ALSO Bigger and BETTER than what I can see.

Thank you for this. I am teaching a portion of a Bible Study series on Prayer at my church and the Lord gave me “Why do you not answer me God!?” as my topic for discussion. I just want to encourage you to keep letting the Lord use you in this awesome way. You are touching many lives with your Spirit-Filled words. Do not get weary in well-doing because even if you touch only one, you have touched that one for the Kingdom of Our Most Holy and Righteous Father. This was so beautifully written and very much needed. I am still in my waiting season and at times I cry thinking God can’t hear me, but He sure does and He reminds me that He does.
